A Brief History of the Betsy Ross Flag
The Betsy Ross flag, also known as the ‘first flag,’ has a rich history dating back to 1776 when it was first created by Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross. According to legend, George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross (Betsy’s uncle) approached Betsy and presented her with a rough sketch of a flag with thirteen alternating red and white stripes and thirteen white stars on a blue field, representing the original thirteen colonies. Betsy made several suggestions for the design, including changing the shape of the stars from six-pointed to five-pointed stars. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, this iconic flag remains an enduring symbol of American patriotism and independence.
