A Brief History of the Montenegro Flag

The flag of Montenegro underwent a significant change on July 12, 2004. Inspired by an old royal banner, the new design features a red border with yellow accents. At its center is a majestic yellow double-headed eagle, proudly displaying a shield with a lion – a nod to the dynastic arms of the Njegoš dynasty that once ruled Montenegro.

In 2006, a popular referendum in Montenegro favored its secession from the federation, and independence was proclaimed on June 3. On this historic day, the flag of 2004 officially became Montenegro’s national flag.
