A Brief History of the South Dakota State Flag

The current design of the South Dakota state flag was adopted in 1992, but did you know that the first flag featured an image of George Washington? This historic flag was used from 1909 to 1963. In 1963, the flag was redesigned to feature the state seal surrounded by rays on a blue field, similar to the current design. However, it wasn’t until 1992 that the words ‘The Mount Rushmore State’ were added. Today, our South Dakota flags proudly display this iconic design, honoring the rich history and heritage of the Mount Rushmore State.
