In 1889, Trinidad and Tobago was officially named a British Crown colony. The national flag, also known as the ‘Sun-Sea-Sand’ flag, was adopted on January 31, 1962, after gaining independence from Britain. The red stripe represents the vigor and courage of the nation’s people, while the white stripe symbolizes the purity of their aspirations. The black stripe signifies the rich soil of the twin islands and the sacrifices made by previous generations.
